computer wont even start up

By michellecovell ·
we recently had a problem where dos couldn't find setup.ini on startup, so we inserted win 98 startup disk. it then came up with some dynamic link problem, then the computer restarted. the problem is, a friend then inserted a recovery disk that theyhad, (i was at work at the time) now the computer will not start up at all, in fact it wont even do the memory test! ive tried everything from tring to get into bios etc but it just hasn't gone that far in the load up. help!

Well, a recovery disk won't harm your BIOS setup, the only posibility for a boot to screew with your BIOS is that you try to flash your BIOS setup with a wrong BIOS file, then it will probably try to overwrite the correct one you had and then you won't be able to start up that mainboard never more.
Try the basics things like, make sure that the powercable is properly connected, that the PowerSupply is working, etc.
Is there any light or any signal that can tell us that your Mainboard is working?, make sure that your CPU is properly attached to the mainboard.
It could be many things, did you hear any beep or something.
I need a little more details in order to help you better.

I agree with the first answer. If the 'recovery disk' your friend used was in fact a disk that flashed the BIOS you will need a new motherboard. There is no recovery from a BIOS that was incorrectly flashed.

If in fact there was a flashing! you will need to make a bootable floppy (youcan boot some boards with a floppy) and get to a working computer with your motherboard make and model and go to the either the motherboard manufacturer web site and download a BIOS program and the recommended Flashing Utility, and carefully follow the makers flashing instructions or order a new bios chip from them. I have resurected dead boards after doing a bad flash, thats how i learned!!!! HOPE THIS HELPED YOU?

There is one simple trick you can try. Press and hold the insert key BEFORE you turn power on to the system. Hold the key until you can tell there is boot activity that means success. If this works, your bios was not flashed but a setting was changed and this will set your bios back to it's default settings. Then you can go back into bios and make whatever changes you need to. Won't work for all boards but enough to give it a shot.

Maybe your friend, while you were at work, did more than installed a recovery disk. Maybe he/she inadvertently changed a bios setup parameter? It should still go past post though and attempt to read your drive. So I suspect you have a hardware problem such as an memory stick not seated properly, or video board not seated properly. Do you get any beeps? exactly what do you see on the monitor and how far does it get when you turn it on. Not doing the memory test can be disabled in cmos setup so that may not be an indication of a problem if that was changed in bios accidentally. Remember its never as bad as it seems and can always be fairly easily fixed... unless he/she had spilled soda in the computer or dropped a screwdriver in there while it was on! <grin> Give us more detail, lights on etc. Open the thing and make sure every thing is connected. You will see some spare power supply connectors hanging there (white color), Reseat the boards, check the switch on the back of the power supply for correct voltage setting 220/110, you want 110.
