I recently began getting the following error on several Win95 desktop systems logging on to a WinNT 4.0 (SP6) domain server:
\\STONE-EDU\NETLOGON\CONFIG.POL Error 2
There are no *.pol files on either the Win95 workstation or the WinNT server. The error doesn't seem to affect subsequent operation. This began occurring after we enforced the Win95 logon, eliminating the option to hit CANCEL.
What is causing this? How can I fix it?

It looks like you have policy configured on local Win95 machine, but don't have the actual policy file (config.pol) on NT server. You need to change local policy: Start System Policy Editor. On the File menu, click Open Registry. Set policy options: Double-click Default Computer, select the computer policy options, and then click OK. (You will need to disable remote update.)
It sounds to me as though there was a System Policy called CONFIG.POL in the NETLOGON share of the STONE-EDU server. IT was used to stop users by-passing the logon. My theory is that it has been removed which causes the error message. Try runningPoledit (on the Win 95 machine, may have to install via add remove programs) and File Menu Open Registry, then Local Machine,Network, System Policy Update, remove the tick from the box.
Only change was "system policy update" was just "system" and then removed the tick form the "remote update" box. Thanks, I've been troubleshooting this for weeks!
If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.
