configuration problem in nat

By avswamy ·
i have configured win2k domain controller in a dual processer intel server. here i installed two nic's, 1.intel, 2. 3com. one is allocated to private ip address, and other one is allocated to public ip address. My domain controller is connected through radio link modem to an isp. My bandwidth is 512 kbps. the network is already configured with unix server and the networking is working.
here i am configuring a new win2k server as a domain controller in unix network environment and converting all the clients to the win2k network.

Our usage is mainly for browsing the internet

configuration problem in nat

i did't want to make ics, i want to configure NAT, i tried to configure nat i installed nat and configured one nic as public ip and renamed as public nic, and other nic as private nic. i configured in rras as one nic is connected to public internetand other one is connected to private lan.

i installed dns and configured as domain controller, in one nic i configured it as dns address as private ip address (server) and for the public nic the dns address as dns address of the service provider(isp) so the name resolution traffic for external things is resolving i am browsing by domain names in server but i am not able to connect my clients to this server.

i am able to ping the server public ip address and i am not able to ping the gateway address (ip address of router at isp end, as there is no router at our end we connected through radio link modem.) i am assuming that static routing configuration is problem.

Try specifying a dns server for you Private NIC. It should be your internal DNS server. Also, make sure you don't have DHCP running on your NAT server.

Hope that helps.

On your clients:

Default Gateway should be IP of private connection in your server.

You must also include the DNS servers of your ISP.

the private connection gateway is always as the public ip address and in public ip the gateway is allways as the router ip and the dns in public is dns of isp and dns for private as private ip. what i have got problem at connecting external server for external dns, the server is not directing to external dns, i have to configure a static connection and demand dial connection and configure it in nat.

configuration problem in nat

i have configured dhcp in server and my server is a domain controller in my network and is serving the clients, on one nic my dns is private dns and another nic dns is public dns(isp dns) when my clients are configured as dns only (my server privateaddress). the clients are connecting but they are not browsing the internet. i able to browse at my server.

when i refreshed dns with ipconfig/flushdns and ipconfig/regiterdns at my server my server is able to resolve all addresses to external and at my client side configuration the dns server should be isp dns why it is required.

while i configured my server ip as dns server my clients are not able to connect internet and browse.

with this experience i am thinking that my server is not resolve names of internet which is another server in internet. how to configure for private network clients authentication things my dns has to work. and for public network(internet)then my server redirect my clients to public(internet)dns.

can any one help me in this regard.
