Configuring DHCP on 2950 CISCO Switch with 2 VLANS

Hi guys…

I have 2 VLANs configured on a 2950 CISCO Switch (VLAN2 and VLAN3). I would like to configure DHCP on my Switch releasing IP addresses from saperate address pools for hosts coming up on both Vlans. Is there a solution other than the Microsoft DHCP Server.

I dont know if the switch will act as a dhcp server.

If you just want DHCP then you can use a desktop computer since there is not a need for that much power. Then install a distribution of linux and set it up as a dhcp server. Put one on each vlan.

This is cheap and fairly simple to implement.

You can use your existing Switch

1.No need to install any other devise, just configure 2 vlans in the switch-Vlan2 & Vlan 3.
2.Create two dhcp pools in the cisco switch with 2 different subnets as per your requirement.
3.Place the ports belonging to appropriate vlan.
3.Device in the vlan 2 will get ip from vlan 2 dhcp pool, and device in vlan 3 will get ip from the vlan 3 dhcp pool.

Free DHCP Servers

There’s quite a few freeware lightweight DHCP servers – check download.com – however, they are going to be LIGHTWEIGHT.
