Configuring NICs in KDE environment

By Niel Harper ·
I have just installed Red Hat Linux 7.3 with the KDE desktop and I am finding it virtually impossible to find out where to configure my network cards. Could someone please tell me what to do. I'm dying here... ARRGGGHHH!!!

Configuring NICs in KDE environment

At a command prompt, you can run netconfig. This is a basic little tui that will set the IP, gateway, mask, and dns server. I do this to get the basic stuff setup. To change the IP, you can also edit the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. To set your dns servers, edit the file /etc/resolv.conf.

Once you have everything set, issue the command ifdown eth0 and then ifup eth0. That will restart your network card. If you have multiple cards, they will then be eth1, and eth2, etc.HTH

KDE 3.x has a good GUI tool for configuring
NIC's. It's included with RedHat 8.0, and if
you're using Linux on the desktop, I strongly
suggest you upgrade to 8.0, or the latest
release of Mandrake, Suse, etc. RH 8.0 is much
better as a desktop OS than previous versions.

There is probably no need to remove the current
setup, just run the 8.0 installation, and select
"Upgrade existing system"

Cheers
