Conflict between NT 4.0 and DOS program

By shepler2001 ·
We use a proprietary DOS pension accounting system and a text editor program called V-Edit. Our server and clients are NT 4.0 (SP6). Two PIII 350 and one AMD K-62 550 (with 64 meg of memory) machines continually freeze while in these DOS programs. They are frozen and must be recycled. I did notice that when in these DOS programs, the CPU usage is at 99% to 100%. We have tried multiple remedies with no success. Does anyone have a resolution or suggestion?

Which settings in PIF files did you try to get them working, and which ones had + and - influence? That might help us guessing in what direction to search...

Thanks for your help. It turned out to be a problem with the video card but it was a great learning experience checking out the PIF files.

Conflict between NT 4.0 and DOS program

In the DOS days memory and program environment where set in the config.sys and autoexec.bat. In the NT environment it is set in the
C:\winnt\system32\config.nt and
C:\winnt\system32\autoexec.nt
I had a simular problem where the program kept running out of environment space and had to increes the number of files "files=150"
and add the
SHELL=C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\COMMAND.COM /P /E:2048 /F
To overcome the problem.
Good luck.

Hi - it turned out to be the video card but the files=150 ending up making another program (within the DOS program)work! The sub-program and R&R - a DOS based report writer program.
