You need a CAT5 crossover cable and a copy of PROXY which can be obtained here:
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm (freeware). The software comes with full instructions and is very easy to install regardless of your operating system.

You could also get a hub. Then you would just need patch cables not crossover. Just connect each computer to the hub and it works.

Your call.

1. You have to make sure, you have similar card type. I mean, you should have both ethernet cards, or both token ring, but not mix of any card type.
IF the card type are different, then you will need some extra hardwares.

2. With ethernet cards (the most common used cards, so I assume you have these), you can use CAT 5 UTP cable.
If you want to connect directly without a hub, then configure the cable as 'crossover'.
If you want to use hub, then use 'straight-through'

Crossover configuration:
First pair:
1 --- 3
2 --- 6
Second pair
3 --- 1
6 --- 2

Straight-through configuration:
First pair:
1 --- 1
2 --- 2
Second pair:
3 --- 3
6 --- 6

Hope that helps

You didn't say so this will be for versions of win9x.

You need the correct settings. The following is done from Network Properties to get there open control panel and select the network icon. There's 3 tab across the top of the box.

Identification Tab, use this first to name the PC and workgroup.

Example;

ComputerName=PC1, Workgroup=WORKGROUP, Desc=PC1

Configuration Tab,

a. Client for Microsoft Networks

b. Adapter= You network card

c. Dialup Adapter=nothing to do here

d. Protocol =TCP/IP You can use simple IP addresses like 10.0.0.1 and the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. The second PC would be 10.0.0.2 with the same subnet.

e. Sharing=Enable file and printer sharing

User Access Tab,
Nothing really needed for this.

Once the system reboots setup files and Printers to be shared.

Open explorer or my computer and choose a folder or printer to share by right clicking on the icon and selecting sharing on each.

Log off or reboot and the PCs should be able to see each other. You have to login in order for the network to function.

A crossover cable will work but it would be better to get a hub or switch.
