Hi

Here's a very basic set of instructions:

http://www.ehow.com/how_13829_connect-two-monitors.html

Essentially, you need a video card that has two connections for monitors (i.e. there must be two input sockets sticking out the back of your machine), and the driver must also be able to recognise that two monitors are attached.

Good luck

You can do it with 2 different video cards in XP Pro, but I highly recommend one of the dual output cards.

Matrox has been making dual output cards for a long time, and I highly recommend them as stable. You can buy them off the site.

If you want the same display on 2 monitors, a 2 port VGA splitter will do the trick. Should be able to purchase one for around $30.00.

Attaching two monitors to one pc is pretty straightforward as long as you have the video card to support it, but do you mean for two people physically in front of the one machine? Or do you mean some kind of remote screen? The reason I ask is because you mentioned wanting 2 people to see the same thing, rather than having more available screen space.
