connect desktop to wireless cable

By robinkayray ·
I apologize profusely for my stupidity. I have a reconditioned Gateway desktop with no internal modem. I want to connect it to my wireless cable modem. Could someone tell me what I will need to purchase to make this happen? I assume a wireless card of some sort, but I am hesitant to crack the case. Can I use an external card or would this be a waste of money?

While you can use a USB WiFi Adapter

Unless you have a strong signal it may give problems.

USB Devices like those listed here

http://au.shopping.com/xDN-wireless_adapters-usb_wifi

Work OK provided that there is a decent Signal to them owing to their size and shape they can not be easily moved around for best results if the Aerial inside them doesn't pick up the Signal cleanly. While you can place them on the end of a short USB Extension Lead they may still be limited in their ability to work as well as a PCI WiFi Card can.

But if you are unwilling to open the case for fear of doing damage they will work though they may be slower than a PCI WiFi Card and considerably slower than a Wired Connection.

There is no stupid questions

Just things you do know yet, an internal modem will not let you connect to a wireless network.
It depends on the Dell computer you have, it may have a wireless connection built in or it might need a card to access the connection.Look at the bottem of the laptop and let us know the service tag number and any other info that is there. And we can help you.
