Connect to computer on VPN with RDC

When I have a computer connected to our VPN from a remote location, I try to connect to it with RDC and the VPN connection disconnects which drops the RDC before it completes the login.

I am using windows PPTP VPN on the remote machine and standard windows RDC on the local machine.

I believe the PPTP VPN connection is running as the remote user so that when I connect to the remote admin account it logs out the remote user which also drops the VPN.

I thought there may be a way to run the PPTP VPN as a service but have not come up with a way to do that.

Is there a way around this?
