Connect WinXP to Win95 PeerToPeer Ntwrk?

By sysadmin ·
How do I get my new WinXP Pro machine to connect with my old Win95 machines on a Home Peer to Peer Network?

The WinXp machine is a pre-installed Dell.
The Win 95's (version C) were built from parts.

When I originally setup the Win95 home network I was a totally uneducated in this stuff and followed instructions that came with my LinkSys hub by rote. The instructions are lost in the mess somewhere and I haven't a clue what I did those many years ago.

I need them to conect up so I can copy all my files from the old machines.

Thanks for any and all help!
Rudy

Does your existing P2P network use NetBEUI or TCP/IP as the protocol?

If it is NetBEUI, which I suspect, you will need to install NetBEUI on the XP PC. Here's a link to instructions.

While I agree with PJ that NetBEUI is outdated, it is simpler to install NetBEUI protocol on 1 PC than for a novice to configure a TCP/IP network (although it is not that difficult for P2P).

Ensure that Workgroup is same for all PCs.

Forget netbeui as its an old and outdated network protocol.
Ideally you need tcpip installed on both machines with a unique Private IP address on each e.g.
10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2 etc
Also you need File and Print Sharing enabled on both machines and Client for MS Networks.
Finally the Workgroup name should be same on all PCs and usernames and passwords set up on all PCs.
