connecting 2 printers

By cliffmo ·
I have a HP 7350 photosmart printer and a Lexmark X63 all-in-one printer. Can anyone tell me how to set them up to run from the same PC? I am using XP Home edition.

you have to check with acomputer reseller parts for a device that can do that. I think its called a printer switch. It's simply 1 device with multiple paralell ports.

It depends on how you are connecting the printers to your PC.

If both printers have USB connections, you can just plug both in.

Since you can only have 1 default printer, select the printer you plan to use most as the default, and select the other as needed.

If both printers are connected using a parallel port, you will need a bi-directional printer switch.
I recommend that you get an auto-switch. That way, you can switch printers using a software program rather than reaching over and flipping a switch.

If you connect one printer using USB, and the other using the parallel port, you can have both connected that same as if both use USB.

According to HP and Lexmark both of these printers use usb.

If you have two open ports then install one of them at a time.

Use the CD's that came with the units or download the software from the internet.

Read the install quick guides. Some printers don't want you to plug the printer in untill you are told to by the software.

Once you have one installed and printing then install the other.

If your computer doesn't have enough USB ports I would install a PCI USB port card. I have seen name brands as low as $15.00.

Some usb devices don't like to be used on a hub.

Good Luck Lee

I would not use a switch box if you want to use them as parallel printers. Buy a second printer port card if you want to use them both as parallel printers. If they both support usb, you should be all set, just plug them in. If you need additional usb ports, add a usb card, don't use a usb hub. Good Luck.

From one Cliff to another, first install the all in one printer, following the instructions and get it working. Then install the other printer, you really should not have a problem. However, I have seen a problem with the USB drivers, if thats the case look on the Lexmark Website in case there is a patch that you would not know about.
