    Connecting a Laptop HD to a PC…

    I urgently need to know how to connect a HD from a Laptop to my PC so I can retrieve some information. I have the adapter to connect it but how and where do I connect it to on the PC’s Mother Board? I tried and I get the msg. that the Operating System cannot be found on any disks. That is why I need to access the LT’s info, WinXp got erased. A friend of mine did it but he won’t tell me how…..he is a tech and wants to charge me $150 Dlls. to give me the info I need…..PLEASE HELP…..

      Assuming you have removed the HDD from the laptop, then the adaptor plugs onto the back of the HDD. Note that there are four pins, somewhat separated from the rest, that aren’t used. Pin 1 of the umpteen way connector is next to these four pins.
      Now plug a normal IDE cable onto the adaptor. Make sure that the HDD is jumpered as slave or installed as secondary master. The power adaptor plugs into a spare drive power plug.

      Do I slave the laptop’s HDD to my PC’s HDD? I have a Compaq Presario 7360, WinXP. The problem with the LT’s HDD is that I get a msg stating that Operating System Not Found. I had tried connecting it to my PC pretty much the same way as instructed, I get a msg telling me: No Operating System Found on any Fixed Disks. Can I get a little bit more detailed instructions please. ASAP !!!

      Connect the notebook drive to the secondary IDE channel of mobo. In a normal setup, simply remove IDE cable from optical drive(s) and connect to notebook drive.

      You will need to boot from installed drive on desktop. Notebook drives are not master/slave selectable so they must be installed as only drive on secondary IDE channel or connected to an add-in controller card (e.g. Promise Fast Trac).

      Have done such a number of times and will work if connected properly.

        Do not connect as slave on same channel as PC HDD. Connect it as only drive on secondary IDE channel. If PC won’t boot in this configuration, check cable connections on notebook drive. Adapters can easily be connected with pin orientation reversed.

      Answer 1 says something about the four pins that aren’t used. That isn’t quite correct. On most notebook HDs you can short the two connectors that are further from the IDE connector in order to select the drive to be slave. You should be able to use any small jumper to do that. You may have to check with your drive manufacturer (homepage) for exact pinouts.

      More info needed. What OS on each sys? Is laptop running? You should just use a network protocol such as NWLINK to use filesharing in windows and move the files over. Dont pay some guy 150 to do a 50 dollar job.

      You must connect the drive as a slave on the secondary ide . Select the bios and detect the drive when you restart.
      It may happen that you can see the drive n the bios but not in windwos . You must then go into the administative tools and the drive management to all ow the drive either be mounted or accepted by windows , you will then require a restart to recover the data you need.
