Connecting a WAP to a central hub, which has a Router on it.

Is it possible to connect a wap straight to a central hub (like a 50 port switch), without going through a router first? If so can you do that, when the central hub has a router or two connected to it as well? Does the wap actually need a wireless network to join? THanks alot for answering my mild to severely retarded questions.
