connecting my power cord to my dell inspiron 8600 shorts the adapter, why?

By raypouncey ·
i have a universal AC adapter that i have been using for awhile no problems. My 8y/o tripped over the cord knocking my Dell Inspiron 8600 to the floor. When i attempted to reconnect the adapter it keeps shorting out the adapter. What could be the problem? With just the battery power it works fine.

Probably destroyed the power jack on the laptop

Make sure the center pin is not bent. On Dell the power goes on outside of barrel and inside of barrel, center pin is 'sense pin'.

Look closely at the power jack on the laptop, it may be damaged.

Also it may be loose

If the NB fell and hit something it could have broken the Power Jack where the Adapter Plugs in off the M'Board even partly which is causing the Short Circuit. if it wriggles at all you need to take the NB in for repairs.
