Connecting To Exchange from VPN

By dennisbv ·
I have setup my Laptop with Win 2000 pro and setup a VPN connection with L2TP and IPSEC. I am able to connect just fine and access my files but I am not able to connect to my Exchange server(which is also my PDC that I can connect to) I even tryedinstead of using the server name I used the servers IP address but no luck. How can I get my VPN computer to resolve names on my private network?

You may need a LMHOSTS file setup with the server names abd ip addresses.

Echange is on your PDC? You "can" connect to the PDC but not Exchange? Your sentence is contradictory and I'm not quite sure what you mean here.

If I go to my network places and search for a computer, If I use the computer name, I find nothing, If I use the IP address it will find the computer. This is how I can browse to my PDC. But in order to connect to Exchange I enter in the computer name of the Exchange server, if I use the IP address I get an error. If I use a Lmhosts file where do I put it?

Okay, we had a similar problem..
1. you have an NT domain.
2. your remote computer is NOT on the domain.
3. Your VPN will connect with IP address, but since you are not a member of the domain, you do not have permissions to browse the domain. This means you will not find your exchange server name.

(is the above correct?)

Here is the work-around
1. make certain that your workstation is a member of your domain and has a computer account on the domain.
2. When you boot up your computer, and you will be using your VPN connection, have the system attempt to login to the domain. It will fail because it cannot see the domain, but it must attempt this. You will probably get an error message that the domain cannot be found and will beusing cached accounts. This is okay.
3. It is very important that your computer attempts to logon to the domain, AND your username and password match a user account on the domain.
4. When you make your VPN connection, have it attempt to logon tothe domain. Do you have the option of using WINS and DHCP? If you do, then please use this.
5. at this point, you are connected, attempt to ping the server by name. If you cannot ping by name, then it will NOT work. All of these steps above are for the purpose of placing your computer on the domain so that you have WINS information allowing you to PING the server by it name. Once you can do that, everything will work just fine.

best of luck. Let me know how it works.
