    Connecting to Network over DSL

    Locked

    by jlucero ·

We have a DSL connection to our PDC in a mixed NT 4.0sp4/NetWare 5.0 network. We have a remote site running Win 95 that is getting a DSL and we want to give them access to the network, both the NT and the NetWare servers through some kind of VPN. What are some of the best ways to do this?

Here is my suggestion: Set up VPN ports through RAS on one of your NT4 Servers. Using an updated Dial-up networking (available from http://www.microsoft.com), the Win95 machines can connect to the NT server over the net. The netware portion is the tricky part. I don’t know how you have it set up now, but you could setup Gateway Services for Netware on the NT4 Server with VPN and have the 95 clients go through it to reach the Netware servers. Now, this VPN method is simple and cost-effective. You can go other routes such as specialized VPN routers, but this will do the job just as good. Email me if you want more info, without knowing your current setup its harder to give a complete answer.

The DUN upgrade refered to in answer 1 is DUN v1.3. This is a requirement for connecting a VPN with a Win95 client (http://download.microsoft.com/download/win95upg/Update/1.30/W95/EN-US/MSDUN13.EXE). Also not mentioned above is you will have to install ‘Client for NetWare Networks’ on your Win95 client… this will allow you to set your ‘Preferred Server’ and such.
