Connecting Windows Vista to another router port = no network

I have several computers (Windows XP, and Ubuntu Linux) connected to the ports of a Linksys WRT54G router. I have to play musical chairs with the router port connections when I add a laptop, but I’ve never had a problem connecting to the Internet. Windows XP could be on router port 1 today, and router port 4 tomorrow and everything works well. Linux could be on router port 3 today and on router port 2 tomorrow, and everything works fine. Of course I have to do a complete shutdown of the operating systems before I switch ports, but that’s par for the course. Anyway, along comes a Windows Vista Home Premium machine. It is connected to router port 1 today, and accesses the Internet fine; it is on router port 2 tomorrow and the OS claims a network cable failure and no Internet. I put Vista back on router port 1 and it’s happy again.

The router ports are all good because Windows XP and Linux access them flawlessly, the Vista ethernet cable is good because it works well on router port 1.

Does anyone have a clue what’s going on?

Thanks,

John
