connecting workstation without a hard di

By derflanoj ·
1. Is it possible for a workstation that has no hard disk to boot from lan and connect to server and run under its OS(Windows98/Windows 2000)to w/o using a dos boot floppy? If YES, what are that software and hardware that is needed to achieve this setup. Can anyone here give me a detailed information on how to do this. I will highly appreciate your help. You can email your answer to derflanoj@yahoo.com if necessary. thanks a lot.

what you need is a network card with a 'boot ROM', capable and configured to use it's on-board BIOS to boot the computer...there are many, one example is 3C905 from 3com. it should be easy to set up or you might tear your hair out. good to have latest version of nic boot ROM software, mainstream motherboard with latest BIOS updates...

Yes, it is still possible... lookup "diskless workstations"

http://nscp.upenn.edu/aix4.3html/aixbman/
prftungd/diskless.htm

Basically these computers have a boot prom that is specially designed and programmed for your network setup. Most often the server is unix-based and the hardware can be anything you have.... just as long as you have the proms.

Here's a "how to" document:

Possible yes, but you better have a seriously fast ethernet connection if you want to load up 98 or 2k over the wire.

This issue requires careful considerations. Booting Win98/2K over the network is quite demanding & not only requires high speed LAN but also huge RAM. These costs cannot be compared with a mere 6GB HDD.

If you still insist, check this site for more infor: http://www.bootix.com/us/price/bxppro.shtml

We run diskless servers with W2K. The Servers have an Emulex controller card installed connected to an EMC? storage using fibre optic cables.
This might be a little over-sized for your requirements...
