Connection Mgr. Service Profile damaged

By frankro ·
In Win98, each time one of my users starts her networked laptop, at the end of the boot and log-in, something called Microsoft Connection Manager throws an error message in the way: "The service Profile isw damaged. Re-install the service profile." Clicking Okay seems to allow normal operation. How do I fix this so the message doesn't come up?

Connection Mgr. Service Profile damaged

TechNet Article I Q232628 talks about this error being a problem between Win98 and either MSN or AOL.
There are 4 different ways to fix this, depending on which program is causing the error. Please read the article for step-by-step details on how to fix:

Hope this helps.

Wow. As Joseph said, the answer I've been looking for for six months is right there, yet I've never been able to find it doing a search on support.microsoft.com. I don't know why. As I figured out from the article, the problem was an unused "AOLTray" in the Startup programs folder. Other possible causes are also listed there, but, for me, deleting the AOL tray eliminated this long standing problem. Thank you!
