You have to update your driver for your new modem. First remove the modem from Device Manager. Here's how: (Have Windows 95/98 CD ready and modem driver from the disk that came with the modem.)

(1) Click Start/Settings/Control Panel
(2) Double-click System icon
(3) Click the "Device Manager" tab
(4) Click on the "+" sign on the left of Modem
(5) Highlight the modem and click Remove button. Do this for every modem that's listed.
(6) Close System
(7) Restart Windows.
Windows will automatically detect your modem and when it prompts for the driver, click Other Location and specify drive A: for your disk. Follow the rest of the prompts.

Check your DialUp Networking, you might need to specify to use the new modem.

Enjoy!

You didn't mention if the new modem was internal or external. If internal, and set to COM2, you have to disable the COM2 port in control panel, the modem will assign itself as a COM2 port; otherwise you may have a conflict such as you've described.
On the other hand, if the reverse is true (your new modem is external and the old one was internal), you have to reinstall the COM2 port for the new modem to use. Let us know which is your situation.

The other two answers you received may work, however I've found that it is often much quicker and easier in Windows 95b and up to remove the modem, remove the com port it is using and reboot, provided you have the windows cd, and the drivers for your modem readily available.

The source of your problem is probably in the answer submitted by clover25...

There is a problem with your com port, you could fish around and find what it is, probably something to do with the uninstall and reinstall, but why bother fish around, remove it and let windows reinstall it with the default settings.

If that doesn't work repeat but also remove and reinstall dial up networking.

In the future give more details about your configuration, i.e., Op[erating System and version, Hardware of topic model #, driver version, etc.

The above mentioned should be able to take care of the issue, but if not try the following.

The problem can occur if the previous modem was a winmodem and the registry information was not removed.
A small program is usually available by the manufacturer to clean the registry of the winmodem entries.

Something else to try would be to disable IRQ steering by opening device manager, click on the plus sign for system devices, open the properties for PCI Bus, and uncheck the box for 'use IRQ steering' under IRQ steering. Restart the system. This will load addition IRQ handling devices.

One last thing would be to look for ghost drivers in safe mode.

Hi,
Try download the "modem wizard 4.5" from shareware.com, download.com etc. This software will help you to solve the problem.
