Connection sharing problem – XP and 98

by donalda-m . Updated 22 years, 12 months ago

Well, I must have brain fog or something, but I cannot solve this one. I?m looking for some fast help, so I?m being generous with points. Thanks!

A friend of mine has a crossover cable network with a shared cable modem Internet connection. The host computer is Windows XP Professional. The other computer is a Windows 98SE. He had full network connectivity and Internet sharing (via ICS) until he ran the Repair option in the XP install program. I have since completely reinstalled XP and ran the network connection wizard on both the XP and 98 machines. The problem below still remains:

The 98 machine can ping the XP machine, and winipcfg shows the XP?s IP address (192.168.0.1) as the dns and dhcp server. The 98 machine can also ping Internet IP addresses, but cannot ping Internet names or of course browse the Internet. Any suggestions as to how to proceed?
