when I add the dns to my xp machines to get internet connection its ok with the network conection.however if I turn off or reboot these xp machines I loose my network connection and would have to add the ip. this is very bothersome
because i get frequents calls from a lot of users

Check that the domain is the same for all the computers - right click on my computer, properties, computer name tab. Then chack that all the computers are on the same workgroup or domain. Also you may want to check that windows built in firewall is not on and preventing access. right click Network places - properties - right click loacal area network - advanced - internet connection firewall.

How are you sharing the internet connection? Are you using a router or internet connection sharing?
Are you using DHCP? If you are using a router, you can setup your DNS info from the router so that it dynamically assigns all the needed information.
If you are using internet connection sharing, you have to make sure that the ICS is handing out ip addresses and DNS info properly.

Make sure that you are logged on as and admin to ensure that your changes are being saved to the systems.
