We are using ScoutSync (same as Palm’s Hotsync Server) to connect remote Palm IIIxe users via analog dial-up connection to our corporate database (RAS). At periodic intervals, we experience connectivity problems which result in an “Unknown” Owner showing up in the Scout Management Console and “Disconnected on date/time” as the Entry Text. The IP address is from a 3600 Cisco Router on our network which provides NAT, and we can see the connection authenticate at our firewall using Border Manager (Novell). Whenever the Firewall is reinitialized, this Unknown problem occurs. Although we can create the problem, we are unable to rectify it, nor can we predict how long the system will be down (hours to days) before it returns to normal. The remote user does pass through authentication at the Firewall but will not be authenticated at the Sync Server.
The routing within our network is as follows:
1. toll free phone number to 24 channel T1
2. T1 splits 16/8 at CSU, 16 lines going to aFax Server, 8 lines dedicated to Palm traffic
3. 8 lines go to 3600 Cisco Router which provides NAT
4. to switch A
5. to firewall – Novell, Border Manager, with Radius authentication – (NW5,sp5 & BM3,sp2 RADIUS 2.04)
6. to switch A
7. to switchB (different floor)
8. to Sync Server, ScoutSync Management Console (NT4,sp6)
9. to switch B
10. to Data Server (NT4, sp6; sql7, sp3)
