constant crashing with XP

By maria512 ·
Help!!! One of the classroom desktops had suddenly developed the problem of constantly crashing. It can happen at any time even on booting up. I cannot get into safe mode either. One of the few times I managed to boot up and run AVG antivirus it crashed about half way through so could not complete. Cannot stay on line long enough to download an online anti-virus. I am assuming this is a virus causing this. Restart button does not do anything so have to turn off actual power supply then reboot, if I am lucky it might boot.I am now at a loss, if I cannot get into the Safe Mode, and I did manage to get to System Restore once and put it back to a previous point it still crashed eventually what else can I do?? Knowing my luck this is probably a simple problem to solve but the teacher is getting desperate because the computer is needed in class.

Hope someone can help.

There should be a bootable antivirus disk you can create via AVG (I'm not overly familiar with them so I cannot verify this). If you can create a bootable floppy from another system then you should be able to verify that there isn't any virus issue on this system.

Two other questions, do these systems access the internet and has anything been changed on them? There may be a driver or other corruption issue happening that is causing this. IF you can get it to boot up again, go check out the event viewer for some more details on the crash.

can you boot into Safe Mode? If so download Stinger at:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
it is very good for Virus controlled computers. another is nod32, try the trial version of NOD32 for DOS at:
http://www.nod32.com/download/trial.htm, this one will even run in command Window of a Windows virus infected computer.
good Luck,

Afterthought:
Run msconfig if it will let you and disable all startup items. Also do a hide MS services on the Services Tab and disable everything that is left.

I would lean to a HW problem, If it is crashing during a system restore, not much of windows is operating at this point. When it crashes, does it power off completely, or just hang? May be a bad power supply

Might also be flaky memory. Try swapping this computers memory with a known good one.

If your computer counts down before crashing, you have the sasserworm virus. You need to load this patch as soon as you get into safe mode. Also unplug the network cable before starting.
