Contingency Plan for Power Outages

By stevehicks ·
I have been given the responsibility to develop a Contingency Plan for Power Outages in our company. Can anyone suggest where on the web I could find some samples of a good plan, or have any other helpful suggestions?
Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Contingency Plan for Power Outages

depending on how involved you wanted it, writing it yourself shouldn't be too hard.

if you just mean to protect your servers, etc from power problems, get a UPS for either the entire computer room or the servers you want to protect. for user's pcs, make sure all pcs have a ups on them.

but contingency plans normally mean corp data, ie servers and normally for disasters and not just simple power outages. with an APC Matrix UPS for example, you could keep several servers up for 8 hours ormore with enough batteries.

we use those plus a 80Kva UPS for the computer room. we can stay up for about 12+ hours when power dies.

if you mean for disaster, make sure backups are done every night, rotated weekly, and monthly tapes put away for at least 6 months with the tapes being places off site somewhere.

also, have at least 1 spare server off site that you can restore to. $$ has to be set aside so that in case of a disaster, you can go out and buy pcs and servers and networkequipment.

commen sense is the best approach.

Guess I did not provide enough pertinent information. We currently have UPS systems on all our servers, which will hold for approx. 15-30 minutes. I just have to document a procedures that identifies who does what, when, etc. if an outage occurs, and if it is an extended outage, document an action plan.

15 to 30 minutes is NOT very long - so you need ot ensure that the system/staff will contact the correct people immediatley, and arrange to down the servers ASAP.

Policys should aslo state that servers are nto brought back up until you are surethe power is stable again.

You need to allow for what happens if priamary persons and the normal secondaryt persona re nto in the office.

Also overnight outages will be a major problem for you unless you have setup the UPS to auto shutdown theservers for you.

It's all basic common sense.

Also Most good UPS suppliers have discussions on what to do - generally on thier web sites - go thorugh all of them and pick the best items form them all.
