Continous Restarts while upgarding to XP

By kummi_gh ·

We are in process of upgrading XP prof. Presently our workstatoions are running in Windows NT and Win2k pro. We upgraded NT machines to Win2k and Win2k to XP. While doing this process, we are not able to complete this task. The System is restarting continuously in the middle of upgradation process (Configuring devices). So we reformating the system and then we are installing XP. Please help on this.

Thanks in Advance.

A clean install is always the best way to go. I would run the compatibility Wizard on your systems to make sure XP likes all your hardware & software. Do this before you reformat. Then check to see if XP drivers are available for all your hardware. If you format the systems and are using an upgrade XP cd then make sure you have a full version of Win2K because it will ask for it before XP will continue.

If all your systems are identical you might want to setup one system and sysprep it then you can Ghost the rest.

I suspect that your NT boxes are old enough to have some non-supported hardware.

XP is having trouble because some devices do not have drivers.

Take 1 PC and run the XP readiness test at and see what problems it finds.

You may need more RAM, or more free hard drive space too.

It sounds as though you have a memory issue.Go here and download the Memory tester. It "does not" require the OS to operate it will test the installed memory from boot disc and give you a status and end report.
