Continuous reboot of XP

By teknoben ·
I have a laptop that crashed while the user was on the net. On startup it enters a reboot loop and I seem unable to enter safe mode or access the rescue console. What other options are there!?

Some spyware has caused that

My solution was to get a copy of Stinger from Macafee and run in while in safe mode. Disable system restore before you do.

If you aren't running SP2, I would seriously consider it. The basic vulnerability that allows this cycle is fixed in SP2.

Sounds like a virus... forgot which one, but there was one out there last year that was causing machines to keep rebooting. Will likely need a removal tool to do it. Check out for more info.

continuous reboot

In order to be able to fix it, you need to type the command SHUTDOWN -A before the shutdown actually starts. Then you can scan and repair.

Good luck.

Sounds like you need to run scandisk from a command prompt. The command is CHKDSK /R
