Contract Work?

by toddblanchard . Updated 25 years, 6 months ago

Hello all. I have been an IT professional for almost 10 years. During that time, I have always worked as a perm employee. Now, as I prepare to begin my 11th year in the business, I find that I am losing my tolerance for corporate life.

I have read many articles recently on contract work. The thought of working in the field that I love, without the hassles of office politics, and with the potential to make much better money, is quite appealing to me. Still, I have reservations and many questions.

So here’s what I am interested in knowing:

What’s it like out there as a contractor? And more specifically, as a contract developer?

What’s the most effective method of securing engagements?

Is it possible to primarily telecommute?I own a home and am not interested in moving _again_. Traveling is not out of the question. My main concern is being there for my family when they need me. Too much travel could be a burden. And who pays for the travel?

What does it take to move into a contract role? Is it possible to make a gradual change from perm to contract?

I fear that I will not be able to find enough contract work where I live, but it seems that all the cities within 3 hours of my home are teaming with contract jobs. Plus, sites like eWork.com are supposedly all the rage. I have heard and read that telecommuting is still on the upswing. So am I wrong in believing that I can boost my career by going contract and getting out of the rut that I endure each day?

I have tried to tell myself that having a secure job each day, that pays the bills, is good enough. But, before the end of each week, I feel emotionally drained and professionally unfulfilled.

Your input is appreciated.
