Control Panel

Whenever I try to access the Control Panel,I get the error message (Win9 "An error occured while windows was working with the Control Panel file c:\windows\system\main.cpl". Noneheless, Control Panel then opens, but I'm concerned that something's wrong. Can you help?

Main.cpl may be corrupted. Or Control.ini is. Microsoft documents the steps to fix here:

Main.cpl is the Control Panel applet for the keyboard, mouse, pc cards (PCMCIA), and power/UPS. Running mail.cpl by itself gives you the mouse control; to get the others to run, you add the appropriate switch.
You get this type of error when the individual .CPL file is corrupted, but it does not affect Control Panel functionality by itself.
So, to fix this, you should a)rename MAIN.CPL to something else (like MAIL.CPL.OLD), and b) extract MAIN.CPL from your Windows 98 CD and put it in the Windows\system folder.
