controlling tv's using a cell phone

By A N D ·
i understand that a tv remote control uses IR waves to send signals.
some cell phones too have IR ports. is it possible that the range of signals may overlap and it would b possible to control tv using such a cell phone?

if there are any such projects you know, please mention it with a link.

It's possible, but not practical

Few phones have IR ports, and the distance range of these ports is very limited.

Years ago, Sony made a IR remote program for it's Clie series of Palm OS PDAs.

Once you figured out the IR codes for your particular TV, which is not a trivial exercise, the result was a slow and hard to navigate remote control with a very limited range (less than three meters).
