This one is a basic math problem. 10 pitch characters means there are 10 characters to the inch all at the same width.

Thus, we have to measure an 8.5 X 11 Paper for usuable surface area. Based on 1" margins and using the formula for area of a rectangle (x=ab), we resolve the following:

7.5 X 10 = 75"

Since there is 75" of printing area, we derive the following:

Area X Number of Characters Per Inch = Characters total on Page

75 X 10 = 750 Characters per page

Thus, the formula for solution is:

Total Number of Characters / Characters Per Page = Total Pages

8000000 / 750 = 10666 and 2/3 pages or paper.

So you are looking at one huge honking document!

Can't agree totally with BFilmFan,

a 7.5" line of print with 10 pitch would give 75 characters across, but while the page may be 10" deep, would you only get 10 lines, which would give you the 750 characters on the page.

More likely you could get upto 60 lines depending on layout, giving a possible number of characters a lot greater that 750 and reducing the number of pages down proportionally.
