Convert .MOV to something WMP can play.

By CharlieSpencer ·
I need to convert a .MOV file to a format Windows Media Player can play. Apple Quicktime conflicts with some of our applications, and WMP has the advantage of already being on all our systems. The video was shot on a cell phone so I assume the quality is pretty low to begin with.

I have almost no multimedia experience outside of replaying '70s tunes on YouTube. I tried a freeware utility called 'SUPER' but it failed to convert to .MPG no matter what settings I tried.

Thanks.

bump....

by ---TK--- In reply to Convert .MOV to something ...

I have never converted a .mov to "X", but I have played around with a whole mess of other conversions... AVI to DVD I use VSO Software, Nero for some other conversions... but that about it...

I surfed the internet for something that "looks" like it would work, but I have yet to find anything that looks legit..
http://www.movtowmv.com/ - looks a little fishy... but if you have a Linux box with WINE, lol I would give it a shot...

If you have a **sneeze**MAC**sneeze** on hand... http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7582_102-0.html?threadID=193108 a discussion on it, but they do talk about programs you could use...

I few other threads on the net suggest converting it to an AVI then to your fav. format, would be the best way.. But makes me wonder, how much quality are you going to lose?

hopefully someone else has a better answer... Good luck!

Well a real AVI file

by Slayer_ In reply to bump....

is just frame by frame pictures, same as the old MOV files used to be before compression.
AVI's are not compressed, and can grow very large very quick.

DivX files, which also use the AVI file extension, are compressed.

Thanks to everyone, but this turned the trick.

Close enough to idiot proof. The icons can be a bit confusing, but hovering over them results in the expected explanations.

If installing new software is no possible, try searching for a MOV codec

by Slayer_ In reply to Convert .MOV to something ...

that you can install on your system, therefore allowing almost all normal media programs to play MOV files.

If that is still not an option... Then I have no other ideas.

You can also check the nix repositories, probably a good chance there is some one use program in there you can use.

I'd prefer a solution that doesn't require any installations / modifications to WMP. The file in question is going to be posted to customer problem database, and all QA and field techs will want to view it. I don't want to have to touch all the relevant in-house systems, or require our field techs to install something.

It'a an option, but at this time I'm going to keep looking at others.

I was just reading this and noticed at the same time, one of the sponsored links on this page was for a MOV converter from www.avs4you.com. http://www.avs4you.com/AVS-Video-Converter.aspx?type=GoogleAdWordsContent&gclid=CIWqseWjw50CFZho5QodVB24yg

I thought it was ironic that as I'm reading, I look over and see the ad for a MOV converter. I'll go to bed now.
