Converting a Works file to Office XP

By Friscojw ·
I have upgraded my system but been unable to read a file create with Microsoft Works. I'm not sure of the version of Works but it was created in 1999. Is it a .WKS or .WPS extension? What tool can I use or what can someone recommend

Convert to what? A new version of Works, or Word,Access, or Excel?

More information:
Excel can only open Microsoft Works files that are saved in the Microsoft Works 2.0 (or earlier) format. You cannot open Microsoft Works 3.0 or 4.0 files directly in Excel.
There is a convertor pack available for Word that might handle WPS files.
Thankfully Works is not going to be continued!

You are indeed missing a converter. Here's how to install it:
1) Place Office XP CD in drive.
2) Select Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Software > Microsoft Office XP.
3) Click Change.
4) Select Add or Remove Features.
5) Under Office Shared Features > Converters and Filters > Text Converters, select Works for Windows 4.0 [since converters are small, I usually install ALL of them to avoid these hassles.]
6) Click Update.

.WPS sounds to me like a WordPerfect file.
