    Converting attachments to read format

    Locked

    by soulsmiths ·

I have yet been able to figure out to convert a text email attachment to readable format. I try saving it it desktop, then using Word but I just get a machine language response. I try importing it to WP but when converting it, I get the message Unsupported File Format.
I know I must be missing something ridiculously simple so please bear with me!
If anyone can let me in on what is probably staring me in the face, I’d appreciate it.
    Thanks, Nick.

      Hi, Nick!
I’d like to help u with your problem (and get the points, hehehe), but u haven’t provided enough info to come
      to any kind of conclusion.
What email client do u use? What email client does the sender use? Is this a “one-time” problem ,meaning-is it
just one particular text attachment u can’t read (in which case it could have just gotten corrupted on it’s way
to u), or does it happen with all text attachments? What text format is this attachment-plain .txt or RTF? Or
.doc orwhatever…And do u have your file association for that kind of filetype intact?
After u answer all these questions I’ll do my best to assist u.

Talli, I responded to your questions but haven’t heard from you & not sure if this will get posted either. I have an example I just received that may be helpful but want to be sure you get this first. Pehaps direct email might help until answer complete.
        Nick.

Talli, thanks for responding. As to your questions:
1)Email client – not sure what you mean by this – I use InternetDirect as my ISP
2)Attachments – I seem to have trouble w/ all text attachments in various formats
3)File Association-not sure mwhat you mean by this.
      Nick.

      Hi again, Nick!
I have not forgotten your question ,and as soon as I found out that u’ve rated the answer, I went here and read it.
Now, email client (which is the most important bit of info here) is the program u use to receive/read email. (e.g. Outlook, Eudora etc).File association means-do u have a particular program assigned to handle/open those file extensions (e.g. Notepad for .txt, WordPad for .doc etc). Or just tell me if u have problems opening same text file types on your systems that are not email attachments. And ,please, name the attachment types (e.g.- .txt, .doc .rtf etc) u have trouble with.
So far it’s still pretty unclear. It could be that u r using a non-Outlook client which cannot read RTF attachments sent by Outlook and OE users-in which case those attachments u can’t read aren’t really attachments but simply Outlook proprietary formatting data encoded for other Outlook clients and appearing as an atachment in non-Outlook clients. But those r only RTF files and only from Outlook senders. If this is the case-I’ll elaborate more on it. It also could be that u r receiving MS Word documents (with .doc extensions) and u do not have MS Office on your system and therefore r not ableto view them. In this case u canget yourself a fre MS Word viewer from http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/Articles/viewerscvt.htm
and then u’ll be able to read those documents but not alter them. But after u give me the info I asked u in this answer, perhaps I’ll be able to get tothe bottom of it.
      HTH
      Good luck.

Talli, I have some answers for you. (Sorry about the rating but I tyhink I have to put this rating in else the questions will close.)
        1) I use Outlook
        2) I have Notepad & WordPad
        3) the sample I have is a .doc
In this case it is a Word 8.0 document. This is what happened:
1)I tried saving it in WP & whne I tried to convert it, it said “Unsupported File Format”. WP lists Word 6/7 so I tried that & it came back “Unknown File Format”. Do yu think Corel may have an upgrade to their conversionroutine for WP8? Or maybe I should use the sw you mentioned to read Word doc.
        2) Tried importing to Wordpad but just machine language
        3) Tried importing to NotePad where I got machine + text.
        Thanks for your help, Nick.

      Hi again, Nick
The situation u’ve described, with the .doc attachment is exactly what I was talking about in the previous answer. So just try doing what I suggested there-go to the link I gave u and download the free MS Word Viewer-read carefully all the instructions ,if there r any (I don’t remember already), download and install it.Make sure the .doc file type will be associated with it-u can do it either thru the Windows Explorer, or, an easier way is to right-click on a .doc file while holding down the Shift key ,and on the resulting dialog box check the “Always use this program to open this file type” box. I believe this will resolve all the problems. Just make sure the Viewer covers the Word version u r interested in.And if this still doesn’t help-repost back with the detailed description of any errors etc.
      HTH
      Good luck.

P.S. Don’t worry about the rating-after all I haven’t solved your problem so far. 🙂
