By jacevedo ·
I have a computer with a NTFS partition with NT4.0 installed and i want to switch it over to 98, is there anyway to do it without formating the drive?

Converting NT O/S to 98

If someone has a better answer than "no" I will be truly surprised! You must reformat. If you had your data on a different NTFS partition you could format and install 98 to c: then use the utility from the sys internals web site to view but not write to the partition. An cost upgrade to this same utility will also let you write to the NTFS partition from 98. Sorry. Good Luck!

Well you could use Partition Magic to convert the NTFS to Fat. However, I would think that if would be cheaper to buy a new hard drive, install Win98 to that and then dual boot between Win98 and NT. Of course, this assumes that you are comfortable with dual booting and such.

Good luck.

Converting NT O/S to 98

Hi,

i think same like the others, the only chance is to use tool and shrink the NTFS partition and move the free space to the begining. Create now an FAT partition and install win98. If you want to boot to NT, Just start the NT CD and Repair the MasterBootRecord and the system files. Copy the files Ntdetec NTLdr and boot.ini to drive C:. Edit the arc path from NT installation to reflect the new configuration on your HD.
Could be like this: From multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT=... ---> multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT =...
Add Line to the boot ini for your WIn98 inst.
Like this: C:\="Windows 98"

Take care about the bootsec.dos file, if you dont have such file, you couldn?t boot win98.

Hope it helps

Frobo
