    Copy command

    Locked

    by nroberts ·

Is there a way to prevent a user from copying a file to their hard drive even if they only have the read only right. We tried setting the copy inhibit attribute (ci) using the FLAG utility on the file which is suppose to prevent the ability to copy even if the user has read and file scan rights, but that didn’t work. Our enviroment consists of a Netware 4.11 WAN running NT4 on the workstations. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Good luck on that issue!
Even if the CI worked, they can probably still use the command save as and create a new document with the original contents.

Sorry I wish I could deliver better news.

P.S. Putt in a good word for me with the Lady Luck, would you?

I belive copy inhibit is only valid for MAC files. Here is one refernce from the Novell knowledge base, TID# 2934965

The only way that I can think of is to set up system policies on the NTWS to prevent access to the local hdd.

What I’ve done in the past was to “hide” the folder or the file. The user(client) will still have rights and applications can see the file, however, users can’t see the folder or file. You can set up policies in NT so they can’t “view hidden files”. It will at least keep “honest” users “honest”. Hope this helps you.

If the file is an executable (EXE) or command (COM) file, you may be able to flag the file as execute only. This will also prevent the file from being copied from the server volume. We used to use this for some DOS based apps that we wanted to keep on the server, but it is not as useful with the multitude of windows apps and DLL files. As mentioned above, the copy inhibit attribute applied to Mac files, but has no effect on DOS/win files.
