Copying data from optical drive crashes the computer

By jksizzle ·
I am running XP MCE SP3 and my maching runs pretty stable except when I copy data from the optical drive. I am not using a 3rd party software to transfer files, just the built in utility. I don't get a BSOD, the screen just goes black and everything freezes. I have to do a hard reset to re-boot.

Oddly enough, I just replaced the drive with a new one and the problem remains so I don't think it is the optical drives fault. It also happens when I transfer files to several different HDD's.

I checked device manager and there aren't any errors.

Here are my specs:
XP MCE 2005 SP3 32 Bit
ASUS M3N78-EM Mobo
AMD Athlon 7850 @ 2.8 GHz
3.33 GB DDR2 - 800 CL4 Crucial DRAM 2 x 2GB
LG CH08LS10 Blu-ray drive

I appreciate any help. My suspicion is that this is a RAM issue but I have tried each module separately and it still happens. I will be runnin memtest overnight to see if I get any errors. (edit: I ran memtest overnight without any errors)

Passed memtest86

I ran memtest overnight without a single error so it doesn't appear to be the RAM.

It happens when I copy to any of my HDD's so I don't think it is HDD related.

Being a Blu-Ray drive - what are you actually copying? ...

by OldER Mycroft In reply to Copying data from optical ...

There is always the possibility that the data is older than the Blu-Ray disc has been in existence.

Have you tried copying from a standard disc?

Just a DVD-RW with data

The disc is fairly new with a bunch of music and data files. The blu-ray drive is supposed to be compatible with all formats of CD and DVD.

This has also happened with several different discs.

There may be something useful in there.

Could be in Dr.Watson crash logs as well.

No Luck

by jksizzle In reply to in settings

I don't have the program. The event viewer doesn't even recognize the freeze up. I am guessing that is because there is no BSOD.

best bet

by wolfie152 In reply to No Luck

best bet would be to maybe try it on a different cd or try a different cd drive

Thanks but...

I have tried with a few different discs and I even swapped the drive for a different one I had laying around.

I am stumped...

Could it be the SATA connection to the MOBO?
