Copying NT WS Profiles

By Bra-k ·
I have about 20 NT 4.0 workstations that we use for community PC's with multiple users logging onto them. These PC's need to be replaced due to lease expiration. How can I copy the profiles off of these PC's and put them on the new PC's without having to have the users relogin and reconfigure their profiles (IE: mapped drives, desktop apperance, ect.) We do not use scripts at all. All settings on done on an individual basis. I know just copying the profiles over does not work.
Thanks in advandce.

In the Window NT 4.0. have roam . local profiles.

The local profiles is stored on the machine that the user logon. When the user logon to other PC, it will have the new profiles.

In the case. I suggest you change all the profiles to roam (which stored on PDC and download to the client computer when paritcular user logon)=> Solve your problem

Way to convert the profiles
Method 1)Right Click of my computer-->Properties-->Users Profiles-->Choose the profiles you want-->Change Type-->Roam

Method 2)Creat each user profiles in the Netlogon share for each user.
Then follow the procedure above
Right Click of my computer-->Properties-->Users Profiles-->Copy to the User profiles in Netlogon share

Then open the User Manager for domain
select User-->Profiles-->Type in UNC path to the user profiles in the Netlogon share

Some information
All the configuration for software (shortcut) and Email can be found on the User profiles. If the profiles size of user is too large ==>requires longer time to logon

Also Test the roaming profiles before remove the machine

OK? Email me if still have any problem

Last time I did it this way: created a share to hold all profiles on the network server, from My Computer -> User profiles copied all profiles to this share (i.e. UserA profile to \\SERVER\PROFILES\UserA, UserB profile to \\SERVER\PROFILES\UserB. Renamed NTUser.dat file to NTUser.man. Updated user's accounts with user manager for domains to set user's profile path to \\SERVER\PROFILES\UserA, etc. After you've installed all the PC's your users can logon to ther workstations and user their roaming profile with no problem. Next time you'll have to change your PCs you'll have to problem with profiles at all. Hope this would help. Ilya.

In system properties, user profile TAB you can copy the profiles to a network drive into a folder with the user's name. Then just copy the folder down to the new PC C:\winnt\ profiles on the new PC.Go to user manager and change everyone to romming profile by given them a profile path (logoff all users) when the profile upload change them back.

I was going to suggest the third answer but I also have another thought. Turn on roaming profiles and let the server copy the profiles to the server this way you don't have to be doing the copying yourself and the server will pull all the needed info. When the new machines are in place and the users have logged back in turn roaming profiles back off and you will have a local copy on the new machine. If that didn't make since e-mail me timber@choice.net

While I like the roaming profiles answer better, it *is* possible to copy user profiles! The trick is that the user cannot do this, since their registry (NTuser.dat) is in use. On both the old and new machines, the copy/move must be done by an administrator while the user in question is not logged on to either machine.
