Copying shares from one server to anothe

By petrosi ·
If I have identical directory structures on two servers, is it possible to copy the shared folders from one server to another easily. If not any suggestions? Thanks.

Copying shares from one server to anothe

by Frobo In reply to Copying shares from one s ...

Hi,

i will show two way?s.
1.) Take regedt32 and copy the information from HKLM\System\currentcontrolset\services\LANManServer\Shares to an file and import this on the other Server. This will only copy the share information but not the Share-ACL. To copy Share -ACL U will need to take tools from NT-RESKIT like PERMCOPY.

2.) U can take a Tool like ScureCopy, to copy Files with ACL to a Destination. It copy?s the Shares with Perms. too.

Hope it Helps

Frobo

Map a drive to the destination.

Use scopy from the NT Resourse Kit and do the following

scopy *.* x: /a /s

This will copy all of the files, subdirectories, and acl info.

If you have two idenitical directories. then just copy the shared folders to the new server and reshare the folders.

Remember thought all your users will still connect to the old server via drive mappings to the unc path \\server\share-name

Also remember that share rights / folder rights and data rights to data that is copied
is over written due to inheritence by the new folders security settings.

So the question is not just an easy way to copy the data , maintain the same share names, change the user mappings to the new shares (login scripts), and keep the same share / folder / data security.

It does not matter copy / move --- the big issue here is that you are changing its logical partition location -- so everything is inherited.
