Corrupt Wins

By jlichtefeld ·
Our domain controller had an error. It seems the WINS database was corrupt. All that was required was to install service pack 6a. I did this. The WINS came back up as corrupt. I attempted the fix from WINS Manager. This does not work. I trieddeleting log files under the appropriate WINS directory and doing the net start wins.
This does not work either. It does not produce anything. I have saved all the log files that were in the WINS folder so I can put them back.

What can I do? I have several hundred people who's e-mail won't run.

PLEASE HELP.

Three suggestions:

1. Try compacting your database.
2. Try restoring database from a backup.
3. Delete and recreate database:

At a command prompt:

net stop WINS
ren %SystemRoot%\System32\WINS\Wins.mdb %SystemRoot%\System32\WINS\Wins.old
net start WINS

Found that the NIC was bad. Replaced it and then the WINS repaired. Thanks. Still have a problem. All users that are remote, cannot get e-mail through their Outlook as before. All e-mail is accessable internally and through the browser, but will not POP.
Is there something else that I forgot to do?

This is a quick solution for your problem.
Uninstall WINS, reboot, delete the WINS folder. Apply Service pack. Reboot, install WINS (at this point you get a error message that installation can't find folder. Go ahead and manually create the folderin the required path). Re-apply service pack.
Add only absolute necessary static IP (Unix, Linux, etc...).
Allow 30 to 60 minutes for the WINS re-populate itself.
You're done!

Good luck!

Just trash your WINS database. It is dynamic and it can be rebuilt without affecting clients. Stop WINS, remove the database files and restart WINS. With a clean database you can add either reboot your Exchange server so it registers with WINS or add a static entry for your mail server. This should et your people back working with mail.
