Corrupted 750 Maxtor sata hard drive

By joelg2012 ·
hi TR this is my first time posting in this community thank you so much in advance. I'll try to be as simple as possible since i've seen a lot of comments in google where a lot gets discussed but i can't seem to see the answer right away.

Ok here we go:
1) I have a 750GB maxtor hard drive that acted as my primary repository for my files.

2) It was nearly 95% if not 98% full of data video pictures, etc.

3) One day it would simply not get recognized by my computer and it wouldn't show up in My computer next to my C: drive

4) I took it out and tried it on another computer with no luck whatsoever. I recall having used chkdisk /f, Recuva from Piriform.

5) One very important step i took was to use a program, i don't remember exactly the name, which tried and read the files and everything inside and copied them to another 1TB hard drive i have. After like 8 hours some stuff was recovered but was basically in indistinguishable folders and everything mixed up.

6)Tried some Linux distributions like Damn Small Linux, Ubuntu, Mandriva Linux and others i think. I either don't know how to mount the drive in certain distributions or it has given me an error saying "try the windows chkdisk program" on others.

7) Im currently experimenting with TESTDISK inside "PartedMagic" which came in the ULTIMATE BOOT DISK (latest version).
* the error im getting now is "the following partitions can't be recovered"

I don't really know how to use this or any other tools but I know there has to be a way....

Thank you any help is kindly apreciated! :)

Data Recovery Service $200-350 USD

by robo_dev In reply to Corrupted 750 Maxtor sata ...

Been there, done that.

If the drive has suffered a head crash or platter damage, you can spend a lifetime trying to run utilities on it, and you *might* get maybe 1%, if by some miracle the data is on some contiguous undamaged sectors of the drive.

The one utility that does work well is the Easus product. But again, keep in mind that if one of the drive heads is scraping the platter, often utilites give false hope...they recover all the file names and what looks like data filed but EVERY file is corrupted.

So what did the Seatools Utility tell you about the drive?

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to Corrupted 750 Maxtor sata ...

Seatools is the Seagate the Maxtor makers Drive Testing Tool. With any potential HDD failure you should first run the Makers Testing Utility to see what if anything is wrong with the drive.

Remember to remove the space from between seagate and the .com for a working link.

fist, robo_dev, its pictures and movies, i doubt he'd spend potentially 350$ for a chance at recovery.
now to OP, you say that youve run programs on the drive like recuva and chkdsk, who not try 'HDDregenerator' its a good tool for recovering corrupted sectors which is probably your issue (if the drive isnt clucking around in there). this may take a long time to complete but is a good bet if you dont want to spend hundreds of dollars. but as always the best chance at recovery is with the professionals.

Hi Timthub6100. I have already used Spinrite and everything seemed like it was working for me until when i reached almost 80% completion i got an error and i heard it was caused because spinrite couldn't handle drives bigger than 500GB... Would you mind instructing me or any experts here? I have Spinrite 6 dot something
