Corrupted excel file on a floppy drive

By edudley ·
I have an excel file that has been saved only to a floppy drive. The file has gotten corrupted. I ran Norton disk doctor and it did detect a bad spot and moved the data but excel still cannot open the file. I get an error "unable to open file". I am using office 97 sr-2. I have tried to open this on another machine and I still am having troubles. It does allow me to copy the file to another location but I can't open the file from that location either. I have run Norton antivirus against the file also. Does anyone know of a utility that could save most or all of the data?

A file corrupted is the worse.
Sorry about your file.
My recomendation to you is try to run the NDD again and see if you still have corruption on the disk (sometimes it needs multiple passes). If you have it install use the Quickview (check out the Windows 9X files under accessories), if you don't have it you can add it from add/remove programs.
I have retrieve lost files data using a similar little puppy called Quickview Pro.

Good Luck!
If you can't get help anywhere elses, you can sendme the file and I'll give a shot.

Check out Microsoft's Technet Knowledgebase at www.microsoft.com/technet/support and look for article #Q142117. This shows you several methods for recovering data from an excel file. Some of the methods include:
-Linking to the data in the corrupted file
-Opening the file in Word or WordPad
-Opening the file in Excel Viewer if installed

Hope this helps. Good luck!

You might be able to retrieve some of the data with Notepad or Wordpad. I don't think you'll be able to ever recover all of the data. Sorry :-(

You might need a driver from the manufacturer. My 8 gig Seagate requires drivers to run with my old BIOS. Upgrading the BIOS will also fix the problem.

Here's a link to a utility that I have used. It plainly states it cannot recover formulas, but it recovers data like a champ. I have seen it used on hopelessly damaged files and it works great.

There is a substantial price if you want to license it, but the demo is good for 30 days.
