Corrupted Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer cannot be uninstalled in Windows. Is it possible to delete all the files and registry entries and start again? The only other solution seems to be to install Netscape.

You can try to repair it by going to Control Panel/Add-Remove programs. But a better solution is to upgrade to IE5 V5.5 which is out now. You can find it here:

This won't work if you dont already have internet access, as you need to download certain components.

This was about uninstalling IE 5. Unfortunately, Microsoft wont allow IE4 to be uninstalled. In this, I think Microsoft have shot themselves in the foot, because the only solution is to install Netscape.

check your Hard drive for multiple copies of the files:-

winsock.dll
wsock.vxd
winsock32.dll

rename any multiples, & give it a go.

Delete the following files:
advpack.dll
inseng.dll
jobexec.dll
wininet.dll
urlmon.dll
wintrust.dll
url.dll
active setup log.txt
iemigrat.dll(only if you have IE5 installed).

If any of the above files cannot be deleted you need to restartthe system in ms-dos mode and delete or rename the file in the system directory.

Click on start\run.
Type regedit and click ok.
Goto Hkey_Currrent_user\software\microsoft and delete the active setup key.

Goto Hkey_Local_Machine\software\microsoft and delete the active setup key.

If you have IE5 you also need to delete the following under Hkey_Local_Machine\software\microsoft:
IESetup and Internet Explorer keys.

Close the registry and reinstall IE.
