Corrupted Win2K

I have a stand-alone Win2K system that as soon as you log into it, the dialog box starts “loading your system settings”. Then immediately it jumps to “saving your system settings”. It is then stuck in this loading/saving loop without ever completing the logon process. Any ideas on how to remedy this?
