Couldnt boot up windows98

By rzwoo ·
When i started up the pc windows 98, it doesnt get me to the login screen windows but to the Microsoft windows 98 startup Menu which have 1. normal, 2.Logged, 3.Safe mode, 4.Safe mode with network support, 5.step-by-step confirmation, 6.command prompt only, 7.safe mode command prompt only. In the meant while, if i choice the selection of 1, 3, 6 and 7 doesnt solve my problem. So that when i run scandisk... the error prompt out with 'scandisk encountered a data error while reading the FAT on drive c: This error prevents scandisk from fixing this drive'

If you have W98 installed, probably time for a new computer

by ComputerCookie In reply to Couldnt boot up windows98

the cost of replacing the hard drive should only be 1/6 of the cost of a new computer.

You could try and download some low level formatting tools from the hard disk manufacturer.

However, you will loose any data that you had on the computer.

There are ways to retrieve the data post a question if you need to do so.

If you cannot afford to buy/upgrade your computer, try reinstalling 98 and see what happens

Cases like this, I recommend referbs

by jdclyde In reply to If you have W98 installed ...

When you can get a modern pc from tigerdirect for about $250 USD, with WinXP loaded, it doesn't make sense to put any more money into that old system.

The only way I would get the old system running again is if I had a hard drive laying around that I could just drop in.

There is a problem with your HDD

by OH Smeg In reply to Couldnt boot up windows98

It may be physical or It may not so you should download the drive makers testing utility and test the drive. If it passes you can use whatever to rebuild the FAT Tables which I would imagine are corrupted or you can reinstall the OS.

If it fails you need to look at replacing the HDD.
