CPU fan error msg

By Mr.D ·
A homegrown WIN98 PC shut down inadvertantly due to a power outage. When it boots up now, there is a message saying "CPU fan not working" but the fan is running. Otherwise, everything seems to be fine. Does this indicate degraded fan function? if not, any ideas to reset the error flag?

Need some answers from you to provide correct solution. No need to address all possibilities, when we can pin it down.

1. Is CPU connected to motherboard with a 3 pin connector?

A 3 pin with 3 wires motherboard connector is required to provide fan RPM information.

2. Does message appear while BIOS is loading or after Windows loads?

Oops, a glitch. First question should read "CPU fan" not CPU.

how old is that coin cell battery backing up the CMOS getting to be. perhaps the cpu fan was never properly hooked up to the sensor but the feature was turned off. and now your battery has gone bad and system is finding no saved cmos settings and loading the defaults. that include checking for the cpu fan which is maybe not and never connected with its little cable that tells motherboard it is spinning

to change that you enter BIOS settings when prompted to during black screen boot. watch all 4 corners of screen carefully. if you can figure out which key to press to enter setup, write down your bios mfg and the guys will tell you how to enter setup. you will see the bios mfg splash screen very first on cold boot. phoenix or ami or compaq or whatever. post that or search their website for how to enter bios settings and change it to not look for fan spinning

The utility monitors fan speed and or cpu temp. You can usually go into bios and look at the numbers.
