CPU Fan keeps running during Standby

By wjbatesusaf ·
I am able to put my vpr Matrix 226R Windows XP desktop into standby mode and wake it up with no problems. Oddly, for whatever reason, the CPU fan doesn't power down, but continues to run continuously during standby. Even more puzzling is that this wasn't always the case. When the system was new, this never happened. It seems to have started after I installed XP SP1 (now have SP2). That could just be a coincidence though. I don't know if something like this could be caused by a system/peripheral driver (I get no errors when I look at Hardware/Device Manager under System). Perhaps a chip on the motherboard failed, but my system is very stable otherwise. I continued to have the problem even after I installed a new power supply (replaced wimpy 300W supply) Not an earth-shattering problem, as my system runs fine. Certainly one that continues to perplex me though. Help and suggestions are appreciated!!

Fishing for possibilities.

Check ACPI Fan setting in Device Manager (under System). If no entry, Windows cannot control.

Check Power settings in BIOS to ensure that power saving is enabled.

These should be the most likely places to start.

I appreciate the suggestions. However, there was no entry for ACPI Fan settings under Devices panel. In addition, there was no setting in my BIOS for 'power saving'. Any other ideas?

This can also be caused by a bad video driver.
Many video card manufacturers have updated drivers to resolve this issue.

Thanks for the tip. I have a NVidia PNY GeForce FX 5700 card with the most current drivers (ver 66.93) installed. So, if this is causing the problem, guess I'll need to wait for an update. Also, I've updated the video driver a few times throughout 2004 and continued having this same fan-standby problem.

I saw the previous post and was intrigued because my problem with the continuous fan didn't start until I updated the video driver quoted in the post. I rolled the update back and restarted my computer and the problem was resolved. Thanks for the great post!

Well, you pinned the problem down whether you realized it or not. As I said, no ACPI fan entry under System means Windows cannot control fan. So you're missing a necessary driver.

Post a comment under your question providing make and model of motherboard. I want to see if it allows enabling/disabling ACPI mode(s).

by Gannadi In reply to

I got similar problems. My fans keep on running in stand by mode.

I use as follows

Intel Desktop Board D102GGC2
Chipset Ati Radeon Express 200

Previously I had no problem. But since re-installing new XP2, I have this problem.

Clue please?

Thanks'

vpr Matrix model 226R has an Intel motherboard/chipset, D845E or D845EBT. BIOS is: BT 84510A.31T.0005.P04. I suspect the BIOS version was customized for this motherboard since the Matrix was Best Buy's computer brand. I tried to upgrade my BIOS with an updated D845EBT BIOS version a couple of times, but the BIOS flash software kept failing. Hope this info helps.
