CPU overload

I have a Gateway Pentium III computer with 650 MHz Athlon Processor. Internet Explorer in Windows XP overloads the CPU and won’t close. Popup ads only compound the situation. It was not doing this several months ago but I can’t pin-point any software that may have caused the problem. Any solutions?
