CPU Spikes

By jcannon1 ·
I have a Windows 2K Server box with MS SQL 2K running on it a nothing else. But every so often, the CPU spikes which slows all connections to it, and whatever it's doing. I'm having the hardest time trying to find out what is causing the spikes. Any suggestions?

Run SQL profiler on another machine and capture all the activity of the SQL server. You probably have a query that is running away until the SQL server gives up and closes it. Look at locks especially. See if you can find the process/ stored procedure, query, view, etc...that is causing the bottleneck this way. It is helpful the use network monitoring to time the two into a common error

Although this didn't exactly solve my problem, your suggestion did help me learn a bit more about it and SQL. Found out that the problem was another application that connects to SQL. Thanks.
